How do you clean electric skateboard bearings?

Cleaning electric skateboard bearings is one of the things that is important for you as an electric scooter rider for many reasons, the first of which is that good bearings will give you better speed and performance.
The good thing is that cleaning it does not require much effort or many tools

Therefore, in this post, we will learn together about how to clean electric skateboard bearings, as well as quick and detailed methods for cleaning.

Is it worth cleaning electric skateboard bearings? (buy or Clean)

Given the fact that bearings cost no more than $20, you might be thinking why should I clean them when I can replace them so cheaply?

In fact, I disagree with this logic for two reasons, the first and most important of which is that we are human and tend to postpone things. When you notice that the bearings need cleaning and tell yourself that I will change them later, you will most likely postpone the purchase until another part in the electric skateboard is damaged!

The second reason is to save you the money you will spend on changing the bearings, which you can use for anything else.

To summarize this point, cleaning your electric skateboard bearings will save you money and protect you from damage to any other parts, in addition to the fun you will get from learning about the internal components of your electric skateboard.

When you should clean electric skateboard bearings?

Before we begin to answer the main question of this post about how to clean electric skateboard bearings, I think it makes sense to first know what are the signs or times when you should start cleaning your electric skateboard bearings.

In this part of the post, we will learn about 5 signs/times, if you find them, then you should clean your electric skateboard bearings.

1- Low performance

The first and most common sign is to notice that the performance of the electric skateboard has become less than usual
Mostly you will notice that the electric skateboard is not rolling as smoothly or as fast as it is used to

If you find this sign, you should check the bearings immediately

2-Hearing unusual noise.

Although the electric skateboard is essentially an electrical device, it has a small mechanical part, and within this part are the bearings. As usual, mechanical parts make annoying noises if they are damaged (just like any mechanical malfunction that occurs in a car).

So, If you start hearing grinding or squeaking sounds coming from your skateboard wheels, it’s a clear indication that your bearings need attention.

3-Riding in wet or dirty condition.

While you ride the electric skateboard in dirty or wet areas, this is likely to lead to debris and water to get into the bearings, leading to increased friction and reduced performance.

Therefore, it is best to clean the bearings routinely after riding in wet or dirty areas

    4-During the regular maintenance.

It is always preferable to make cleaning the bearings part of the regular maintenance of the electric skateboard, because in this way you will ensure continued high performance, and you will also be aware of the condition of the rest of the small mechanical parts present in the skateboard, because while you dismantle the bearings, you will check the rest of the mechanical parts.

    5-A quick look before riding.

Before riding the electric skateboard, you can take a quick look at the wheels and the bottom of the skateboard. If you notice that they are dirty and there is mud or sand stuck on, it is best to check the condition of the bearings.

How do you clean electric skateboard bearings?

In this part, we will learn how to clean the bearings step by step with pictures.

    Tools.

    • 1-Skate tool.

Did I adjust the electric skateboard trucks correctly? am I missing something? What is the way to adjust electric skateboard trucks?

I got a lot of theses questions from my friends or Facebook groups, and for those who do not know me or have not looked at About Me page, I decided to create this blog in order to encourage my blog visitors to maintain their electric vehicles themselves, especially since 80% of maintenance can be done by yourself without visiting a repair shop.

Based on this, I decided to make an easy and complete guide on How do you tighten electric skateboard trucks? so that it gives you the correct way and also the necessary advice for that.

    Now let’s get started..

How do you tighten electric skateboard trucks?

To tighten your electric skateboard trucks, it is preferable to use the tighten tool that comes with the skateboard (if you do not have it, you can use a wrench suitable for the size of the trucks nut).

Step 1: Using the Tighten tool turn the nut counter clockwise.

This is the starting point for you, and the goal of loosening the nut is to count the number of turns of the nut until it is equal to the rear trucks.

Place the tighten tool straight on the nut (90 angle)

Start rotating the tool clockwise and count the turns so that it is a complete turn when you reach the starting point

Step 2: stop turning when you can’t move the washer by your hand.

After each complete lap, try to move the washer, and when you cannot move the washer, stop

Step 3 :Repeat the same steps on the rear trucks

Step 4 : is to rotate the skateboard tool counterclockwise at an angle of 45 degrees, then try the electric skateboard.

Based on my personal experience, this method will achieve the highest level of balance and stability as well , however its still a personal preference to everyone.

Therefor in the next section I will share with you useful tips you should take into consideration while tighten your electric skateboard trucks.

Tips to take into consideration while tighten your electric skateboard trucks.

1-Tighteness is not Good or BAD.

The tightness of electric skateboard trucks has nothing good or bad. It all depends on two things: the ways in which you ride the skateboard and also your style of riding.

The tightener the trucks, the greater stability you will get at high speeds.
The more you loosen it, the greater the ability to maneuver, but at the expense of stability.

Therefore, if you are riding the electric skateboard on twisty roads or your riding style depends on many maneuvers, it is not best for you to extremely tighten skateboard trucks.

The opposite is true, if you are riding a skateboard quickly on straight roads, it is preferable to tighten the trucks.

2- Your weight is key factor

Your weight as a rider on the electric skateboard is an essential factor that you should take into account because the more you weigh, the higher the stability you need to be, and therefore you will need to tighten the truck more tightly in order to prevent wobbling at high speeds.

while lighter riders might prefer looser trucks for easier turning.

    3-Check for Even Tightness.

Make sure that the trucks are tightened evenly to avoid an uneven ride. Tighten the nuts in a crisscross pattern to ensure uniform tightness on both sides.

    4-Ride and Fine-Tune.

After making adjustments, take your electric skateboard for a test ride. Pay attention to how it feels during turns, at different speeds, and on different terrains. Based on your experience, fine-tune the tightness until you find the sweet spot that offers both stability and maneuverability.

    5-Consider the Type of Riding.

The ideal truck tightness also depends on the type of riding you do. For downhill riding, tighter trucks are generally preferred for stability, while for street or freestyle riding, slightly looser trucks might be more suitable for tricks and turns.

    6-Regularly Check and Adjust.

Over time, the nuts and bolts on your skateboard trucks may loosen due to vibrations and regular use. Regularly check the tightness of your trucks and make adjustments as needed to maintain optimal performance.

    7-Use the Right Tools.

Use a skate tool or a wrench specifically designed for skateboard trucks. This ensures that you can tighten or loosen the nuts and bolts effectively without damaging them.

How do you know if your electric skateboard trucks is too tight or too loose?

While adjusting the trucks, a question will come to your mind: Are the trucks too tight or are they too loose?
Therefore, in this part, I will explain to you How do you know if your electric skateboard trucks are too tight or too loose?

In order to know whether you are tightening the trucks too tightly or not, you should look at the pushing. If you find it squeezed and swollen, then you may be tightening the trucks too much.

If you can move the washer with your hand easily, the trucks are too loose.

One of the things that may bother you while riding an electric skateboard is how quickly the battery runs out, especially if you have a premium motor higher than 300 watts.

In this case, you will not only need a large battery, but you will also need to modify your riding style and take some preventive steps that will increase the range of your battery.

Therefore, in this post, I will discuss with you the possible reasons that may lead to the electric skateboard battery running out quickly, and also what you can do to avoid this problem.

Why is my electric skateboard dying so fast?

As a general rule, there are many reasons that lead to the electric skateboard battery running out quickly, but the most important of these reasons are:

Damage to a cell or group of cells inside the battery
    BMS damage
The third most important reason is poor storage in winter

Now let us discuss all the possible reasons that lead to the electric skateboard battery draining quickly.

1: Damage to a cell or group of cells inside the battery.

The electric skateboard currently on the market works with a lithium-ion battery, and although this type of battery is considered the future in the world of batteries and is currently used in the manufacture of most Electric vehicles, but this type of battery requires a controlled protection system to ensure that no fire or explosion occurs inside the batteryز

Accordingly, this type of battery is designed to operate according to the efficiency of the lowest cell inside it.

In other words, if you have 13 cells inside the battery, all of them charged at 100% except for only one cell, which is charged at 50%, the BMS system will manage the entire battery on the condition that all cells have a charge rate of 50%, and when this cell runs out of charge, the battery will be completely shutdown.

After we have explained the reason, we must answer two important questions at this point:

How do I know if I have a damaged cell?
What should I do if I confirm that there is a damaged cell?

Let’s start with the first question

How do I know that I have a damaged cell inside the electric skateboard battery?

Here you should measure the voltage within all the cell groups one by one using a multimeter

There is also a method, based on my experience, that you can use to confirm that there is a damaged cell without using a multimeter or opening the battery in the first place.

This method depends on monitoring the charging time of the electric skateboard battery, meaning if you charge the battery in 4 hours and notice that this time has significantly decreased, this is evidence that there is a damaged cell.

Now the turn for the second question:

What should I do if I confirm that there is a damaged cell?

If the battery is a year old or less, most often all you need is to rebalance the internal cells by placing the battery on the charger for 12 hours and disconnecting the BMS cable.

If the skateboard battery is somewhat old, the damaged cell must be identified and replaced (it is preferable for this process to be carried out by a specialist to ensure that the battery cells are soldered correctly).

    2: A Damage BMS

electric Skateboard Battery cells & BMS

The second most common reason for a rapid battery drain is damage to the BMS or battery management protection system
The idea is that when the BMS is damaged, its reading of the cells voltage will be incorrect, and therefore you will notice that the skateboard suddenly shutdown.

The solution to this problem is to first test the BMS, then try to do a reset, then change the BMS if it does not work to do a reset.

recently I wrote a detailed article that explains in an illustrated way how to test and reset a BMS

    You can view it here

How To Test & Reset battery BMS? (Explained with PICs)

    3:Poor Battery storage.

    electric Skateboard long term stroge

There are many opinions on how to store the electric skateboard battery, but in reality all of these opinions revolve around the correct percentage of charge that the battery should have before storing it.

In order to clarify this point, the matter depends on two main points:

The first point is the storage period.

If you intend to store the battery for a long time, the charge should be between 30% and 50% to ensure that the battery is not damaged.

However, if you are going to store it for a short period, the charge percentage should be between 70% and 30%.

The second point is the place where you will store the battery.

If you live in a very cold area in the winter, you should turn on the battery at least every month or two, discharge the charge, and recharge it again.

The goal here is to ensure that the cold does not stop the chemical processes occurring inside the battery.

After we have explained the most common reasons for the rapid depletion of the electric skateboard battery, we will move in the following sections to the reasons that have some effect on the speed of battery depletion.

    4:Battery Health.

Battery life is measured by the number of charging cycles, i.e. from 20% to 100% is considered a complete charging cycle
On average, the battery life is between 700 and 1,000 charging cycles, which is equivalent to two to five years

If you are using the electric skateboard continuously, it is possible that the battery is approaching the end of its lifespan and the range may be reduced.

Here you should change the battery

    5:Temperature.

High or very cold temperatures directly affect the battery range, although the effect of high temperature differs from the effect of cold on the battery, but in the end the noticeable effect for you is a reduction in the range and the speed of battery depletion.

    For high temperatures:

During the operation of the battery under normal conditions, the battery produces some heat as a result of the passage of electric current and the movement of ions. If the temperature surrounding the battery is high, it will significantly affect the movement of ions, and thus the battery will run out faster.

Note: In high-quality batteries, the maximum temperature inside the battery is 30°C, and I am talking about the temperature inside the battery, not the weather temperature.

    For extremely cold temperatures:

In the same way as before, the movement of ions inside the battery cells is very little due to the extreme cold, which may cause the battery to quickly run out or stop working completely.

Note: The internal battery temperature must not be less than zero for the battery to operate efficiently.

    6:Riding Style.

Your style of riding the electric skateboard will also affect how quickly the battery runs out. If you are accelerating all the time and using the brakes a lot, you will consume the battery much faster than if you were using a moderate method of riding the electric skateboard.

    7:Rough terrain or uphill.

Riding Electric skateboard on rough terrain

When you ride the electric skateboard on steep hills, it requires extracting intense torque from the motor, which requires rapid battery consumption in a short time.

On the other hand, difficult terrain affects the motor’s battery consumption

Note: This point greatly affects the battery range in all electric vehicles. I even notice it in my electric car (Tesla Model S). A mile from my house there are some hills, and when I cross these hills, the charge rate decreases by about 7%.

Therefore, if you avoid the hills on your way, you will save a significant percentage of charge in the electric skateboard battery.

    8:Mechanical Issues.

Any mechanical issues with the skateboard, such as a dragging wheel or a misaligned motor, can cause the motor to work harder, using up more power.

    9:Firmware/Software Problems.

Sometimes, issues with the skateboard’s firmware or software can cause abnormal power usage. Updating the firmware might help in such cases.

    10:Charging Habits.

If you frequently overcharge or completely drain your battery, it can lead to reduced battery life over time. Lithium-ion batteries have a limited number of charge cycles.

    Conclusion.

In conclusion, Apart from internal cells issue & BMS and using the right storing method, maintaining your electric skateboard’s battery life requires mindful consideration of various factors.

From battery health and riding style to terrain and charging habits, being aware of these elements can significantly impact the longevity of your skateboard’s battery, ensuring optimal performance and a longer lifespan for your electric skateboard .

One of the situations that bothers you most while dealing with any electrical device in general is that you won’t turn on
When it comes to the electric skateboard, the matter is more annoying because when we decide to ride the electric skateboard, we are in a state of waiting to enjoy it and start it.

Therefore, in this post, I will explain to you How do you fix an electric skateboard that won’t turn on

    now let’s get started.

How do you fix an electric skateboard that won’t turn on?

As a general rule, the reason that an electric skateboard won’t turn on is a problem with the battery or charger.

The previous answer means that 100 % of the reasons that the electric skateboard will not turn on is a problem with the battery or charger, but the question here is: Will all problems with the battery or charger lead to the skateboard stopping working?!

The answer is, of course, no, and that is why in this section we will mention all the problems that may occur in the battery or charger and cause the keyboard not turning on.

1-One or two wires split from the charging port.

Charging wires split from the charging port.

Splitting of the charging wires in skateboards is a very common issue.

The reason for this is the design of the skateboard, which is very close to the ground, which makes the lower part of the skateboard exposed to vibration and shocks.

The solution to this problem is very easy, which is to re-solder the wire again

    re-solder the wire again

    2- Bad BMS.

The second problem that may cause the electric scooter to stop working is that the battery management system (BMS) has a problem that causes it to stop receiving electrical current, and therefore the electric scooter will not work.

The battery management system is a very important part of any battery, and that is why we have dedicated the following post, which explains in detail how it works, as well as the testing method, and finally how to perform a reset.

How To Test & Reset battery BMS? (Explained with PICs)

In general, the solution to this problem is to either reset the BMS or replace it.

    3-Unbalanced battery cell.

Inside each battery is a group of cells, and the cell is (a 4.2 volt battery).

When the charging process begins, the BMS allows the electrical current to pass and monitor it so that it can disconnect the electrical current when the first cells reaches the maximum charge level, which is 4.2 volts, but in some cases Sometimes there may be a damaged cell and the ion movement does not occur properly, which will cause a lack of discharge with use.

In this case, every time you try to charge the electric skateboard, the BMS will sense that there is a full battery and prevent the flow of electrical current, this will cause the electric skateboard to stop working because the rest of the cells are empty.

The solution is to rebalance all battery cells and replace the damaged cell

In order to rebalance, there are two ways:

The first method (which is the easiest) is to disconnect the BMS cable, then leave the battery to charge for 8 hours, making sure to be near the battery and check it at least every hour.

The second method: is to take all the battery cells out, recharge them externally, and then replace the damaged battery

Note: In order to determine which battery is damaged, measure the voltage inside all the cells, and if you find that all the cells have 3 volts or less and only one has 4.2 volts, change it.

sometime you will find that the battery cell that is damage is less than 2.0 volt and all the other cells are 3v or more.

    4- Dead Battery.

If the electric skateboard is not turning on after a long storing period , then most likely the battery has lost a lot of its charge during the storage period and some cells have become completely devoid of charge.

The solution to this problem is to test all the cells inside the battery and identify the damaged cells (they have a charge of less than 2 volts), then replace the damaged cells and recharge the battery.

    5- Broken\ bad Charger.

Sometimes the reason for your inability to operate the electric keyboard is that the battery is empty because the charger has become damaged or has a problem. In this case, you should test the charger and replace it if necessary.

Note: You can view the following guide that we have dedicated to all the information (testing, replacement, and troubleshooting) you may need about electric vehicle chargers.

E-Bike Charger Woes: How to Spot, Test, and Fix the Gremlins

    6-Damage charging port.

In other cases, the reason for your inability to turn on your electric skateboard is that the charging port itself is damaged. In this case, you can change the charging port.

Note: If the electric keyboard is still under warranty, it is preferable to contact the manufacturer and send them a video showing the damage to the charging port so that they can send you a replacement or send them the electric skateboard for maintenance.

    7-Water Leakage.

If this problem occurs after riding the electric skateboard on a rainy day or on wet ground, then most likely a water leak occurred inside the skateboard.
The solution in this case is to open the electric skateboard and make sure it is dried well, then try to charge it again. If it does not work, then you must test all its parts separately in order to determine the damaged part.

Note: This problem is considered one of the problems that requires a specialist, so perhaps you should consider sending the electric skateboard for maintenance.

8-Bushing & the trucks are warped or broken.

the bushing & trucks are responsible for the movement of the electric skateboard so if you notice the the skateboard are not working or in some cases working on its own you should replace the bushing & trucks to fix this issue.

    Conclusion.

we can summarize the reasons why the electric skateboard won’t turn on in the below table.

    Reason \ IssueFIX
One or two wires split from the charging port.re-solder the splitted wire
    Bad BMS.Reset or replace BMS
    Unbalanced battery cellRebalance battery cell

The electric bike charger is an important piece, but at the same time there is not much information about it
The reason for this, from my point of view, is due to the long life span of the electric bicycle charger, which reaches up to10 years

The second reason is its relatively low cost

Therefore, in this post, I will try to make it a reference for all questions about electric bike chargers.

In order to cover all aspects of this topic, we will answer the following questions:

    • How do I know if my ebike charger is bad?
    • How to test ebike charger with multimeter?
    • Why is my eBike charger stays green?
    • is it worth it to repair an ebike charger ?
    • Can I charge my e-bike with a different charger?
    • Are chargers with fan much better?

How do I know if my ebike charger is bad?

The reason why Electric bike owners asked this question are mostly for two reasons:

either the charger does not work at all or they noticed that the charging period has become longer than usual.

In order to know whether the charger is good or bad, there are some signs that you can notice without opening the charger cover These signs are as follows:

Cuts in the wires: If you notice that there are cuts in the charger wire, whether it is on the side of the charging outlet or in any of the other parts of the wire, and the charger stops working, then you must weld the wire again

Bad smell: If you notice a bad smell coming out of the charger while charging, this indicates damage to some of the internal parts

Damage to the charging port: Sometimes, with prolonged use, an insulating material forms on the charging port, which leads to charging cessation

But if all of these signs are not present and you want to know whether the charger is good or bad, you should test it with a multimeter, which we will explain in the next part.

How to test ebike charger with multimeter?

How to test ebike charger with multimeter

In this part, we will need a multimeter and an electricity source of 120v or 220 volts, depending on your country, in order to complete the process of testing the electric bike charger

    Testing Steps:

1-Connect the charger to the wall outlet.

2-Set the multimeter to DCV 200 or higher.

3-put the multimeter probs in the charging socket & check the ,multimeter readings

If the reading is 36 or higher, then the charger is working well, but if the reading is 20 or less, then the charger has a problem.

Why is my eBike charger stays green?

The charger stops working or the lamp stays on green due to two reasons
The first reason is that the charger is not connected to the electric bike battery, or if there is damage to the internal AC of the charger

On the other hand, there are some other factors that lead to the stability of the green light and the incompleteness of charging, including the presence of dust on the internal board of the charger, and there may also be a rise in the temperature of the charger, which leads to it stopping working.

Is it worth it to repair an ebike charger?

As we mentioned in the introduction to the post, the prices of electric bike chargers are relatively low, but does this mean that repairing the charger may be useless?

In fact, the answer here depends on two main points:
First, what is the quality of the damaged charger and is it the original charger or not?
What is the type of problem? Is it just cleaning or soldering wires or even changing the socket?

in fact, if you have the original charger and want to change it to another charger because of a minor problem (such as what I mentioned in the second point), you are raising the risk for nothing , because a copy chargers are made of bad materials and are not subject to any efficient tests, and therefore can cause damage to the battery.

To summarize this point: If you have a simple problem, it’s totally worth it to repair.

Can I charge my e-bike with a different charger?

In the next part, the questions will be about how to buy a new charger and how to choose a charger that is compatible with your electric bike battery .

Usually it is written on the back of each charger the maximum output & input , such as output 2.A, as well as the maximum support voltage.
The maximum voltage is calculated using this equation: Number of cells * 4.2v

For example, if you find that the charger supports 54.6 volts, this means that you have 13 internal cells in the battery

On the other hand, if you have a 48 volt, 10 amp battery

This means that if you use a 2 amp charger, you will charge this battery in about 5 hours (the battery ampere is divided by the charger ampere).

Based on the previous information, theoretically, the higher the amperage capacity of the charger, the shorter the battery charging time.

From a practical standpoint, it is preferable that the charger’s capacity not exceed 40% of the battery’s capacity.

Meaning that if you have a 10 amp battery, the maximum charge for the charger should not exceed 4 amps.

The reason for this is that the high flow of electric current causes heat, which leads to a reduction in the life span of the battery cells over time.

To sum up this point: Yes, you can charge your ebike with a different charger as long as its capacity does not exceed 40% of the battery ampere capacity.

Are chargers with fan much better?

We all want to get high performance from electrical appliances, and the idea of having a fan for cooling is a concept that has become essential in our world, but does this apply to chargers, in fact, no!

The reason for this is that in 90% of cases you will not need a charger that outputs a very high ampere while you are charging the electric bike, and therefore you will not need a fan for cooling

From my point of view, having a fan in the charger does more harm than good because it is a source of entry for dust, small insects, and water.

All of the previous reasons are considered a useless risk because you basically do not need it!

That is why it is always preferable to have a fan-less charger for your electric bike battery

The electric bike motor is the basic piece that represents the core of the electric bike, and without it, your bike cannot be called electric.

Despite the importance of this piece, it is known that it is not easily to get damaged and its lifespan may range from 20,000 miles to 50,000 depending on the power and type of the motor, as the design of the hub motor is considered to have a relatively longer lifespan than the mid-drive.

Although this information is considered good news for us electric bike riders, the presence of noise coming from the motor is considered very bad news.

The reason for this is that the presence of noise means that there is damage to one of the components of the motor, and here the matter is completely subject to luck.

If the noise is caused by parts that can be repaired or not

Therefore, in this post, I will explain to you all the reasons for hearing a noise from your electric bicycle motor, and also explain what can be repaired and when you should decide to buy a new motor.

    Now lets Get started.

    Normal VS Abnormal Noise.

Before we get into the practical part of solving motor problems, I should first explain to you the difference between normal and abnormal noise produced by your e-bike motor.

Normal noise is the result of the movement of the motor, which is mostly the result of the movement of the internal parts.

The strength of this noise varies depending on the design and strength of the motor.

For example, a hub motor does not emit a loud noise compared to the noise coming out of a mid-drive motor.

    Now you may ask,

How do I know whether the noise coming from the motor is normal or not?

Based on my personal experience, normal noise is composed of only one sound, which increases or decreases according to the speed of rotation of the motor

As for the abnormal noise, it is caused by two different sounds, and it is loud in the first, and as the motor is wound quickly, it begins to gradually decrease.

Why is my ebike motor making a noise?

As a general rule the reasons why e-bike motors make noise are:

    • Gears and gearboxes issue
    • Damage Bearing or lake of greasing
    • Misaligned stator magnet ring
    • ebike controller issue
    • Chain rattling noise
    • Loose bolts or nuts
    • Spokes loose

After we mentioned the most common reasons that cause noise from the motor, we will explain how to fix each of the previous reasons.

Note: The previous reasons are arranged from most difficult to easiest

1-Motor Noise that caused by Gears issues.

The noise resulting from a problem with the gears is a sound of metal friction, the sound is louder at slow speeds than at high speeds.

To be more precise, the reasons that lead to this sound in the gears are either the ring gear slipping or the intermediate gears are damaged.

The solution to this problem depends on the extent of the damage to the gears.

If the problem is the ring gear, you will need to have it drilled and pinned. If the intermediate gears are damaged, they will need to be replaced

however In this case, I recommend changing the motor completely, and this is for two reasons

    • The first is that the cost will be very high, very close to the price of a new motor.
    • The second is that the bike’s performance will be less than it was.

2-Motor Noise that caused by Damage Bearing or lake of greasing.

The sound of noise resulting from a problem in damage bearing or lake of greasing is a sharp metal or plastic friction sound, the sound is low in pitch at slow speeds and the pitch increases with the increase in motor movement

In order to solve this problem, you must open the motor (we will explain the method in the next section) and check the bearings. If they are broken, they must be replaced.

But if it is intact, it should use a large amount of lithium grease to help in reducing friction

You must also make sure that the bearing are tightened well and correctly

    3-Misaligned stator magnet ring.

The electric bike motor works by electromagnetic force and is surrounded by poles of magnets called the magnet ring. All magnet poles must be organized in the form of a circle of equal height.

If any of the magnet poles move out of place, there will be a metal friction noise and also a decrease in the motor’s response.

We will explain this method in a pictorial manner because it will also help you understand how you can open your bike’s motor

Step 1: flip your ebike and remove the chain.

Step 2: Using Allen key remove all screws of the motor.

Using Allen key remove all screws of the motor

Step 3: After opening the motor you will notice that some magnet are moved up.

After opening the motor you will notice that some magnet are moved up

Step 4: Using small screw push the magnet back to its original place.

Step 5: using super glue try to put some small drops in the gabs between the magnet to avoid repeating the issue.

using super glue try to put some small drops in the gabs between the magnet to avoid repeating the issue.

Step 6: wait for 1 hour till the glue dry then close the motor.

4-Motor noise that caused due to ebike controller issue.

Sometimes the motor noise is caused by a problem with the controller and not with the motor. This problem often occurs after maintaining the bike or installing a new controller.

The sound of this noise is like a thin ringing, and the motor often does not move or moves backwards

In this case, you will need to test the controller or perform a reset so that it once again recognizes the motor and turns in the correct direction.

We explained how to reset and test the controller in previous posts, which you can view here:

3 Proven Techniques for Testing Ebike Controller at Home

Resetting Ebike Controller | Full Guide

    5-Chain rattling noise.

The noise may be due to the electric bike chain not being in the right place or not being tied well, which causes the feeling that the sound may be coming from the motor (especially if you have a mid-drive).

In this case, you can check the sound of the motor by using the throttle only.

If the sound disappears, the problem is with the chain. so you should lubricate it & place it in the correct position.

    6-Loose bolts or nuts.

The role of the external screws and nuts in the motor is to ensure that the two parts of the motor are well connected to each other.

If some of the screws are loose, there will be a hollow noise while the motor is moving.

The solution here is to check the screws and make sure they are intact first, then tighten them well.

    7-Spokes loose

If you have a hub motor, you have certainly had the experience of having one or more spokes loose
This is common in electric bicycles that have a hub motor because the weight of the motor is on the rear wheel and the motor is fixed on it using the Spokes

In this case there will be wobbling at the rear wheel with some ringing noise

The solution in this case is to tighten the Spokes well and make sure how fast the motor is on the front or rear wheel

Can you reduce the motor sound?

If we explain the causes of noise from the motor, you may ask if there is any way to reduce the sound of the motor. In fact, you will not be able to reduce the sound of the motor, but you can maintain the original sound of the motor through good maintenance.

If you want to get very little sound, your best option is a hub motor made from international brands that have motors that operate very quietly.

    Conclusion.

In order to summarize what came in the post, we will mention the problem, the type of noise, and the solution in the next table

Why is my eBike battery not working

The battery in the electric bike is one of the most expensive parts, so the occurrence of any problem with it is very expensive. In this post, I will explain the most important reasons that may lead to the electric bike battery stopping working.

Read Also, How do I know if my eBike battery is bad? (Explained)

Why is my eBike battery not working?

    1- BMS issue.

Just as the controller is the brain that controls the entire electric bike, the BMS is the brain that controls the battery, and its main function is to close the battery and disconnect the electric current in the event of any problem in the internal cells of the battery or the electric current entering the battery

if any problem occurs with it, it may cause the battery to stop working completely.

Read Also, How To Test & Reset battery BMS? (Explained with PICs)

    2-OverDischarging.

Most electric bikes use a lithium-ion battery, and this type of battery is not recommended to be completely discharged from the charge, because this severely affects the internal cells, which may cause the battery to completely stop working.

    3-Fuse Issue.

All electric bike batteries have a fuse that acts as a safety valve for the battery. In the event that the amperage rises beyond the permissible limit, the fuse will be damaged and prevent the passage of the electric current completely. In this case, the entire battery will stop working.

    4- Damage Cell or Cells.

In the electric bicycle battery, if a cell is damaged, it is as if all the cells have been damaged, and the reason for this is that the BMS operates at the lowest voltage level in order to ensure the protection of the battery
Let me explain this point in another way.

If you have a cell voltage level of 2 or less, the BMS will consider that all battery cells are level 2, and the reason for this is to protect the rest of the battery cells in the event of major damage

Based on this, damage to one internal cell will lead to the entire battery being covered and stopped working.

    5-Cell Imbalance.

Follows the previous point if there is an imbalance in the internal cells of the battery, the BMS will shut down the battery completely when the first cell reaches the minimum charge.

    6-Connectors issue.

In many cases, the reason for the battery to stop working is not due to a problem with the battery itself, but it may be a problem with the connectors, which can disrupt power flow and cause the battery to stop working.

    7-Bad charger.

One of the reasons that may cause the battery to stop working is charging it with a bad charger, which may cause one of the following problems:

Allowing a higher ampere, which leads to damage to the fuse and the battery to stop working
Allowing an ampere is less, which will take a very long time, which leads to a decrease in the voltage in the interstitials, which may lead to the BMS shutting down the battery completely.

    8- Battery Degradation.

The life span of the battery is measured by the number of charges, which may vary from one brand to another.

You will notice that there are batteries whose default life is 1000 charge cycle , and others may be 800 cycle. But on average, the life span of an electric bike battery ranges between two to five years, depending on the use and the materials used in manufacturing

Therefore, the reason for the battery to stop working may be the end of its life span or the end of the number of charging times.

    9-Physical damage.

If the battery of your electric bike is external, it may have been affected by a hit that caused any part of the internal parts of the battery to break, which will certainly cause the battery to stop working.

    10-Extreme temperature.

The internal BMS in the battery is programmed to withstand specific temperatures, and if these temperatures are reached, it will shut down the battery as a precaution to preserve the battery.

These temperatures in most batteries are a maximum of 40 Celsius
Or zero Celsius is the lower limit

Note: These temperatures are the internal temperatures of the battery and not the weather, meaning that the external temperature may be 45 °C, but the temperature inside the battery is less than 40 °C.

    11-Water Exposure.

The electric bike is not completely isolated against water and also the battery, although the insulation is often good, but in the case of riding your e-bike in heavy water, water leakage into the battery is very likely, which will cause the battery to stop working.

    12-Software glitches.

Some e-bikes have software systems that interact with the battery. Software bugs or bugs can also lead to battery operation problems.

How to fix the issues that causes battery stop working?

In this part, I will try to share with you the solutions to the previous problems in brief.

    Issue Sign Solution
BMS issue.Battery will completely close replace BMS
OverDischargingBattery will completely close & won’t take any charging keep battery on charge for 24 hrs , if the issue still exist you have to open the battery & test all cells with Multimeter

How long does Ebike PAS last?

The PAS in the electric bike is considered one of the fairly recent additions to the electric bikes that used to be fully accustomed to the throttle.

With the addition of the PAS, the function evolved for it, starting from sensing the number of crank turns to sensing the force of pressure on the pedal and many other features

Based on this development, the PAS has become primarily responsible for the performance & also fun that you get while riding the electric bike.

Therefore, the question about the life span of the PAS is considered an important question.

That is why in this post we will discuss How long does pedal assist last? And what are the factors that may affect the life span of the PAS and also how to increase the life span of the PAS.

How long does pedal assist last?

As a general rule, the life span of the PAS ranges between 5,000 miles to 30,000 miles, depending on the method of use and the technology used in it, as well as the capabilities of the electric bike as a whole.

Key factors that influence how long pedal assist lasts.

Knowing the exact life span of the PAS is very difficult because the default life depends on several highly influential factors.

In this part we will explain the factors that affect the life span of the PAS

    1- Battery Capacity.

The battery capacity is one of the factors that directly affect the PAS, because the higher the battery capacity, the greater the range of the electric bike
Which means that the consumption of PAS will increase, which will reduce its life span even if it is used in a moderate manner.

    2-Terrain & riding condition.

Terrain and riding condition are factors that affect the lifespan of a PAS as well.

    let me explain more,

When you ride the electric bike in the opposite direction of the wind or in rough terrain, you will need to use the PAS continuously and also stronger

This will reduce its life span, quite the opposite of riding an electric bike in a mild climate and paved roads.

    3- Rider efforts.

The effort you make while riding the bike also works to reduce or increase the life span of the PAS. The more you use the electric bike pedal, the more dependence on the PAS, which will reduce the life span.

    4-Start and Stop Patterns.

Continuous pedaling may result in a longer assist duration than frequent stops and starts, as accelerating from a stop consumes more energy.

    5- Number of assist levels.

The higher the levels of assistance on your bike, the more dependable it is on these levels
At this point, there is no direct effect on the life span, but what affects the life span is the rapid transition between these levels, which will lead to a reduction in the life span.

    6-Bike Size.

The greater the size of the electric bike in terms of weight and height, the more the rider relies on the PAS, which reduces its life span

    7- Manufacturing material.

The quality of the materials used in the manufacture of the PAS, of course, has a direct impact on its lifespan
The better the materials used in manufacturing, the longer the life span

What you should do to increase the lifespan of the PAS?

In this part of the post, I will share with you some practical tips that directly help in extending the life of the PAS.

    1-Proper riding style.

Avoid sudden or aggressive starts. Gradual acceleration is easier on the motor and battery. Shift into lower gears when starting from a standstill to reduce stress on the engine.

2-Use the appropriate level of assistance.

Choose the appropriate level of assistance based on the terrain and your riding needs.

    Remember:

    Higher levels consume more energy.
Use lower assist levels when you feel comfortable saving more pedaling effort.

    3-Pedaling smoothly.

Maintain a smooth, consistent pedal motion to reduce stress on PAS.

    4-Maintaining optimal tire pressure.

Proper tire inflation reduces rolling resistance and makes it easier for the engine to assist.

    5-Avoid overloading.

Follow the weight limits recommended by your electric bike manufacturer. Overloading can stress the motor and battery and increase the decency on your E-bike PAS which will reduce PAS lifespan.

    6-Avoid extreme conditions.

Ride a your bike in cool temperatures. Extreme cold or heat can negatively affect the performance and longevity of the PAS. as the inside PAS sensor will be affected by more heat or high temperature.

    Conclusion.

In order to summarize what was stated in this post, the life span of the PAS ranges between 5,000 miles in the case of not taking care of it, and it may reach 30,000 miles in the case of good care of the PAS

One of the most important factors that affect the life of the PAS is the terrain and the roads on which you ride your bike in addition to the style of your riding and also the materials used in the manufacture

On the other hand, you can take some steps that will increase the life span of the PAS, and among these steps is riding the bike in a moderate way, avoiding sudden kick-offs, and also making sure to adjust the air inside the tires.

Why is my ebike PAS not working

The PAS in the electric bikes is considered one of the most important technologies that have been added to the electric bicycle, which is also supported the presence of the most enjoyable type of motor, which is the mid-drive.

In the past, the electric bike worked with throttle only, however in my opinion, it was much less fun than what is the case now with the presence of the PAS

That is why you will find that the vast majority of e-bikes that have a mid-drive motor depend on the PAS, which gives great importance to it in the electric bike, especially since it is compulsory in many European countries and some American states

That is why in this post I will try to explain to you the most important problems that may occur in the PAS and how to solve them

However, before I start, you you should first know what the PAS consists of and how it works in the electric bike

Then we will move on to problems and solutions.

What is PAS & how it works on your electric bike?

The PAS is the pedal assist sensor, and it consists of four parts, a magnetic sensor, a wire, and a plug connected to the controller , as well as a magnetic disc.

The PAS works in the electric bike by fixing the magnet disc to the crank, so that it is exactly opposite to it the sensor.

When you use the pedal, the sensor senses the movement and sends a signal to the controller to allow the passage of an electric current from the battery to the motor

The amount of force coming out of the motor increases directly with the increase in the movement of the pedal and the rotation of the magnet disc.

Through the previous explanation, it becomes clear to you that there are 5 main parts that are used in order for the PAS to work. In the next part, we will explain the most important problems in these parts and how to solve them.

Why is my ebike PAS not working?

As a general rule, the PAS does not work well if there is a spacing between the magnetic disc and the sensor, or if the magnet disc is not installed on the crank well.

Of course, the previous two problems are the most well-known reasons why the PAS does not work well, but there are also some other reasons that we will discuss here

We will start the explanation from the easy issue to the most difficult issues.

1-Dirt or Mud on the Magnet disc.

The presence of dirt or mud on the magnet disc will reduce the sensitivity of the sensor to the movement of the magnet
The sign of this reason is the extreme delay in the degree’s response to the movement of your feet on the pedal

This problem can be solved by cleaning the magnet disc and the sensor well, if you find dirt on it, but make sure that cleaning the sensor is not done with water. Use a cotton with alcohol to clean it.

2-Gap between Sensor & Magnet disc.

One of the problems that cause the PAS to stop working is the presence of a large distance between the sensor and the magnet disc. If you have this problem, you will notice that the motor power is very weak compared to the speed of pedaling

In order to solve this problem, bring the sensor close to the disk, so that the distance does not exceed 1 cm, in order to get the best performance from the sensor.

Note: It is always preferable for the sensor to be close to the magnetic disk, but it should be taken into account that they are not sticking to each other.

On the other hand, some electric bike companies use high-quality sensors that allow you having a distance greater than 1 cm.

It is always preferable to refer to a seller to find out the correct distance in the event that your bike was in warranty or from a well-known brand.

3-Magnet is not gripping on the crank.

In many cases, the magnetic disc is inside the crank or is installed in a way that leads to movement on the crank, in this case you will notice that the bike works intermittently, in other words

You will get the same amount of power from the motor without any weakness, but intermittently

The solution to this problem is to fix the magnetic disc well on the crank using an adhesive or a nut.

    4-Cut in wires.

One of the reasons for the PAS to stop working is the presence of a cut in the connecting wire from the controller to the sensor. In this case, I prefer to completely change the PAS to ensure the best performance. If you do not want to change, you can weld the wire again.

    5-Sensor issue.

Also, one of the reasons that lead to the PAS stopping working is the presence of a problem in the sensor , and in this case you will not get any power from the motor with the continued use of the pedals.

The solution to this problem is by replacing the PAS, but in order to know that the sensor really has a problem, you need to measure it in millimeters using a 5 volt power source.

You can see how a 5 volt power supply works and how to test with a multimeter FROM HERE

    6-Controller issue.

In a few cases, the PAS stop working is not due to a problem in the PAS, but the problem is in the controller, and if this problem occurs, the PAS alone does not stop working, but you will notice other parts stopped working also

The solution to this problem is to reset the controller, and if the problem is not solved, you have to test the controller and incase of errors you need to replace it.

You can check out the following two guides to learn how to do a test and a reset for your ebike controller.

    7-Barke issue.

The brake function in the electric bike is to help stop the bike immediately, and the first step for the brake to do its work is to completely disconnect the electric current from the bike
So, if you notice the sudden stop of the PAS and all the previous problems are not present, you may try to disconnect the brake cable and try the PAS again.
If the PAS works again, the problem is with the brakes, not with the PAS

    Conclusion.

There are 7 problems that can cause the PAS to stop working, and they are:

    Issue SymptomsFIX
Dirt or Mud on the Magnet discExtreme delay in the degree’s response to the movement of your feet on the pedalClean Magnet disc & sensor
Gap between Sensor & Magnet discMotor power is very weak compared to the speed of pedalingBring the sensor close to the disk, so that the distance does not exceed 1 cm

In my personal opinion, the PAS is the dividing point between the fact that an electric bike is not a regular bike, and it is not a motorcycle either
The idea of the PAS work is based on obtaining additional power from the motor by sensing the power of pedaling or the speed of pedaling , depending on the type of electric bike.

However, there are times when you will need to rely solely on throttle or even pedal without the help of the PAS

That is why, in this post, I will explain to you three easy ways that you can use to cancel the PAS from your electric bike.

Why PAS is important on Ebikes?

Before I explain the ways to Turn off the PAS, I think it is necessary to explain what is the importance of having PAS on your the electric bike, because some people may want to Turn off the PAS without a real need. which is not a good idea.

In fact, the matter here may not be related to personal desire, but it’s also has a legal aspect.

1-It mandatory to have PAS on your ebike in Europe.

The first reason that may increase the importance of the presence of the PAS in your electric bike is that most of the laws regulating electric bikes in Europe require the presence of a PAS in the electric bike.

Accordingly, disabling the PAS on your electric bike may be illegal, so you should be careful when choosing how you will Turn off the PAS.

    2-More battery Range

When you use the PAS, you make some effort, and this reduces to some extent the power coming out of the motor, especially if you are riding on hilly roads.
This of course will reduce battery consumption and increase battery range.

    3- More exercise.

Your use of PAS at level 1 or 2 will increase the effort exerted while riding the bike, which will make you get an acceptable level of calorie burning

I will suffice with these three points in this part, as the aim of this post is to explain how to Turn off the PAS and not to explain the advantage of the PAS 🙂

How do I Turn off PAS on my ebike?

As a general rule you can turn off the PAS on your electric bike by adjusting the P10 setting to “1” or moving the PAS magnet to the front wheel and finally disconnecting the PAS cable from the controller.

Now let’s start by explaining the steps of each method..

Adjusting P10 setting to turn off PAS on your ebike

Step 1: Power on your ebike then ,press & hold (+) & (-) buttons for three sec.

press & hold (+) & (-) buttons for three sec.

Step 2: Using power button navigate to P10 setting.

    Step 3: Set the P10 value = (1)

The P10 settings consist of three values:

0: It means that the bike will depend on the PAS and turnoff the throttle

1: It means that the bike will depend on throttle and turnoff

2: means that the bike will use both PAS and throttle.

2-Moving PAS magnet to Front wheel.

Moving PAS magnet to Front wheel

If you live in a country where you are legally required to ride an e-bike with a PAS, then this solution will be a good solution for you Because the idea behind this method is keeping PAS working, but without any effort from you.

This will be achieved by moving the PAS magnet to the front wheel, and based on the new location of the magnet, whenever the front wheel moves, the PAS will operate without the need to use the pedal.

In order to do , all you have to do is to transfer the magnet to the rear wheel, but you will face one problem, which is the short length of the PAS wire, and you can overcome this problem by connecting an additional wire,

however, you should lengthen the wire from the middle so that the magnet remains connected to the original wire Also, the plug is connected to the original wire.

lengthen the wire from the middle

    3-Disconnect PAS Caple.

The easiest way among the three methods is to disconnect the PAS cable, but I personally do not prefer it because it will give you a permanent error message on the electric bike screen, which is very annoying

You can use this method if you are in a hurry or if you are solving another bike problem and want to remove the PAS

On the other hand, if you decide to use this method permanently, it is preferable to disconnect the PAS cable from the controller side, because this area is more isolated in electric bikes.

    Conclusion.

We can summarize what came in this post in the following points:

    • Before you use any method of closing the PAS, you should know the legality of this act and whether you really need it or not.
    • If you want an easy way without error messages on the screen, you can use the P setting to turn off the PAS
    • If your bike does not support the previous settings, you can move the magnet to the front wheel
    • If you want a quick way to turn off the PAS, you can unplug the cable
